The trail retraces the sites of the German reprisal of 23 August 1944, which led to the burning and destruction of the villages of Santa Giustina, Naronchie, Pradal Centro and Pradal Basso.

On that day, in retaliation for a partisan attack carried out the previous night against the Santa Giustina barracks occupied by German troops, the Germans unleashed an unprecedented punitive action against the civilian population, whom they accused of helping the resistance.

The most significant damage was suffered by the villages of Pradal Centro and Pradal Basso, where homes were almost completely destroyed and damaged. No civilians were killed during the action, but the inhabitants found themselves suddenly homeless and without any means of support.

For most of them, a period of misery and poverty began. In the end, the majority of the population chose to emigrate to areas in the valley floor such as Savassa and Forcal, or even abroad, from where they would never return.
