V1 – Ring of St Augusta

The Ring of St Augusta

The trail known as the “Anello di Santa Augusta” (Ring of Saint Augusta) begins in Piazza di Sant’Andrea in Bigonzo. The route climbs up to the sanctuary dedicated to the 5th-century martyr and patron saint of Serravalle.Da Piazza di Sant’Andrea di Bigonzo, ha inizio il percorso denominato “Anello di Santa Augusta”. L’itinerario sale al Santuario dedicato alla martire del V secolo e patrona di Serravalle.

The current 17th-century sanctuary, built on the site of a previous 15th-century chapel, stands on the spot where the saint’s relics were found. The trail passes through several ancient rural villages, including Vinera, Naronchie, Pradal, Pradal Alto, Marén, Valcalda and Pradal Basso. It then descends back into the town along the road that leads to the 13th-century Church of Santa Giustina, crosses Serravalle and returns to this square, where the 14th-century Parish Church of Sant’Andrea is located.

Trail that runs along a dirt or concrete road, and paved road at the beginning and end.

On trail V1, you can take a detour along the route ‘to the sites of the German reprisals (23 August 1944)’.

Trail

Start

Km 0.00 – From Piazza Pieve in Bigonzo, take Via Alessandro Citolini, passing Via G.B. Fusari and Via Callalta consecutively. After crossing the Enel canal, turn left onto Via Borghel (370 metres), follow the canal and then descend between the houses of the village until you reach Via Vinera.

Km 0.600 – Turn right and begin climbing alongside a wall, following a series of bends.

Km 0.950 – The slope becomes gentler (fountain), proceed straight ahead on asphalt through the vineyards until you reach the concrete ramp of Via Sassi, where the woods begin.

Km 1.800 – Turn left onto a small road not accessible to traffic, which winds its way up and down to the Chapel of San Lorenzo.

Bus dell'Aria Calda (Hot Air Hole)

Km 2.400 – The road climbs uphill on cobblestones from Serravalle to the Sanctuary of Santa Augusta (this is the final stretch of Alta Via No. 6, which leads from the springs of the Piave River to Vittorio Veneto).

Continuing uphill, you will see a sign on the right indicating the ‘Bus dell’aria calda’ (hot air hole). This is a small natural cavity, reachable in a few minutes, from which a stream of air flows. Next, you will come across the Chapel of St. Peter, the old fortified gate and the Chapel of St. Elena at the base of the staircase leading to the Sanctuary.

The route continues to the left, but it is possible to take a detour to the sanctuary by climbing the steep staircase (crossing the square to the left of the sanctuary, you will soon rejoin the route). (There is a drinking fountain to the right of the church).

Sant'Augusta

Km 2.600 – Follow the small road below the sanctuary and, after a short concrete ramp, you will arrive at the rear of the square (benches and tables).

Continue through the gate marked by two pillars, descending briefly to meet the path on the left that leads down to Santa Giustina. (Possible shortcut variant). Continue straight ahead on an easy dirt road that climbs gently.

Km 3.600 – Borgo Naronchie, continue straight ahead at the crossroads.

Borgo Pradal

Km 4.150 – Downhill for a few metres to reach Borgo Pradal. Then leave the asphalt road and take the dirt road that climbs to the right. (Continuing on the asphalt road, you can descend and shorten the itinerary).

Km 4.700 – Borgo Pradal Alto (fountain) proceed straight ahead through several ups and downs, sticking to the main road.

Km 5.000 – At the crossroads, keep left, going downhill briefly and passing a house, then after a few more ups and downs you will reach Rio di Pradal. Go back uphill along Via Scarpedal, which leads to the top of the climb via a short concrete ramp.

Km 6.000 – Crossroads between Via Scarpedal and Via Val Scura (keep right to reach the peak of Monte Pizzoc). The trail continues downhill steeply to the left.

Borgo Maren

Km 9.650 – Junction with the path descending from the Sanctuary of Santa Augusta (via Naronchie). Proceed downhill, passing the chapel of the Madonna del Rosario.

Km 10.000 – Santa Giustina: leaving the church on your left, cross the bridge over the River Meschio until you reach the stop sign, cross the road and continue along Via Antonio Cantore, then turn left onto Via Caprera and then up Via Giuseppe Mazzini (the Church of St John the Baptist is on your left) to pass under the archway that leads down Via Roma. (There is a drinking fountain at the widening below the Castrum).

Serravalle

Km 11.000 – Piazza Marcantonio Flaminio, continue straight ahead under the arcades of Via Martiri della Libertà until you reach the Clock Tower, where walkers turn left along Via Pietro Paietta.

(Cyclists continue under the Clock Tower and follow Viale Camillo Cavour until they reach Via Antonello da Serravalle, where they turn left and continue along the road, passing the traffic lights until they return to the starting point).

End of route
