V13 – Perdonanzestellung

Perdonanzestellung

A fairly challenging route in the central section, where there are stretches of rough terrain, particularly on the downhill section after the crest of Monte Piai, with slippery ground. If you want to turn back before reaching the Dottor/Botteon houses, simply descend along Val Sian, which leads back to San Fris without difficulty.

Please note that the “Perdonanzestellung” trail is currently closed due to landslides in the section after the downhill stretch from Monte Piai towards Borgo Castagnè, before the house on the right. A detour has been created to allow access to the trail, but particular caution is required, especially after periods of rain.

Trail

Start

Km 0.00 – The route starts from Piazza Giovanni Paolo I (commonly known as Piazza Duomo). With your back to the cathedral, walk along Via Gian Paolo Malanotti until you reach Via Antonio Correr, where you turn left. Continue straight ahead until you find Via del Montebello on your right.

0.500 km – Take Via del Montebello and continue, ignoring the junctions with Via Luigi Giuseppe Marchetti and then Via delle Perdonanze, where the asphalt gives way to a dirt road. Continue straight ahead, passing first Villa Palatini and then the A27 motorway viaduct. After the viaduct, the dirt road begins to climb and, after a hairpin bend and a curve, levels out near a vineyard.

Km 1.400 – At the edge of the vineyard, turn left and climb until you find a gap in the vegetation that leads to the path that climbs under the slopes of the Bigontina hill. Here you will see a small sign indicating the route of the Bigontina ridge: however, this path is difficult to find and requires the ability to hike over rough terrain. Continuing along the main path, after a few hundred metres you will reach an uninhabited house. Continue climbing until you reach a road just where the asphalt ends.

Perdonanze stellung

Km 2.000 – Keep right and continue uphill on an easy dirt road. The view now opens up onto the plain and, on clear days, you can see the distinctive silhouette of Mount Nanos in Slovenia. After about two hundred metres, the road descends briefly and the Montello peaks over the horizon.

Km 2.300 – On the left, you will see the ‘Perdonanzestellung’, a reconstruction of a trench built by the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War. Continue straight ahead and after a short climb, descend along a cemented section at the end of which you will see another small sign indicating the Sentiero del Partigiano (Partisan Trail). Again, this is an unmarked trail that requires some experience. Continue along the dirt road which, after a short, steep ramp, leads to the group of houses known as “Dottor/Botteon”.

Trail 1042

3.000 km – Continuing along the concrete road, keep left (there is a drinking fountain on the right) and after a few steps you will see a small road on the right that climbs uphill with the sign for trail 1042. The road heads uphill into the woods. This is where the most difficult part of the path begins, due to the uneven terrain and the gradient. After a few dozen metres, the small road turns into a hiking trail. At the first hairpin bend, ignore the two trails on the right and continue uphill. At the second hairpin bend, ignore the trail on the left. If you want to avoid the difficult section, you can shorten the route. Without climbing the ramp, before the hairpin bend, you will see a small road on the right that climbs up the edge of the vineyard. At the end of the climb, near the shrine dedicated to St. Anthony the Abbot, keep to the right and descend along the Val Sian to San Fris, where you will rejoin the route at km 8.700.

3.500 km – You reach a notch on the crest of Monte Piai (the V10 “Le Creste” route joins from the left). Turn right and make one last effort to reach the top of the climb. After passing a cattle fence, you reach a panoramic viewpoint.

Borgo Castagnè

Km 3.550 – From here, the view extends towards the Pre-Alps, where you can see Col Visentin, Monte Pizzoc, Teverone and other peaks in the Alpago chain. Now descend along the steepest slope on a well-marked track, bearing in mind to take the path that branches off to the left (do not go past the fence). After an initial stretch of false flat, the trail passes a turnstile and then descends through the trees, becoming more challenging due to the uneven ground and slope. Please note: following heavy rainfall, it can be particularly slippery.

Km 3.900 – You will reach a dirt road, turn right and descend slightly before climbing again until you reach a house where the asphalt road begins. After a flat stretch, descend towards Borgo Castagnè, where there is a drinking fountain on the left. Staying on the main road, pass between the houses of the suburb until you reach the bottom of the descent, then climb for a few hundred metres until you cross the Tarzo-Vittorio Veneto asphalt road.

Castello District

Km 5.000 – At the junction with the paved road – we are in the Castello district – continue straight ahead, up the steep concrete road (trail 1042). When the slope begins to level out, you will see a path on the right that descends into the vegetation. Take this path and you will soon reach the paved road below. Continue downhill to the left, passing the church and then, again on the left, the old primary school. Immediately after, you will see a small road on the left that climbs steeply (stone wall). Climb up and after a few steps the trail curves and levels out. Staying on the main trail, you will come to a house. Continue past a point where you can see through the vegetation and notice the work being done to consolidate a landslide. Stay on the main trail, ignoring all the junctions, continuing downhill until you cross trail 1042A. When you reach the houses, turn right and then immediately left along a grassy lane until you reach Via Monte Zebio, which you follow to the end. Continue straight ahead and take Via dei Posoccon, which branches off from the main road and climbs to the right. Continue along the dirt road, ignoring the junction on the left, until you reach a hairpin bend, where you continue straight ahead.

Via San Fris

7.000 km – Take the dirt road downhill. A little further on, on the right, you will see the ruins of an old house.

Km 7.700 – Leave the dirt road and take the trail that branches off to the left. After about a hundred metres, after a bend, you will see the shrine dedicated to Saint Rita.

Km 8.300 – At the fork, descend sharply to the right until you reach the concrete road below, where you continue descending, keeping to the right.

Km 8.600 – At the crossroads, keep left and go up the dirt road which, after the top of the short climb, descends again on a concrete surface.

End of route

Km 9.200 – At the junction between Via dei Posoccon, Via San Paolo and Via San Rocco, keep right and go up the dirt road until you reach the small temple dedicated to San Rocco. Continue downhill until you reach Via San Fris, where you will see a shrine dedicated to San Rocco.

Km 9.500 – Keep left, continuing first slightly uphill and then beginning to descend. Pass the junction with Via Correr and continue along Via Rossi, enclosed by the characteristic Cenedese stone walls just below Villa Papadopoli, until you reach the starting point in Piazza Giovanni Paolo I (km 10.100).
