Monte Altare
A fairly challenging route in the central section, where there are stretches of rough terrain with rocks and terraced steps, and some moderately exposed sections. If you only want to reach the cross and then retrace your steps, the route is easy.

Trail
Start
Km 0.00 – The route starts from Piazza Giovanni Paolo I (commonly known as Piazza Duomo). Leaving the Cathedral behind, head towards the fountain and turn right onto Via Brevia, which climbs steeply. After about 150 meters, you will reach the intersection with Via San Rocco and Via Cavertino. Continue straight ahead, climbing steadily. Where the road levels out, you will notice the signs for Trail V11 on the left. Proceed walking under the arch of Cardinal Della Torre, from where you can see the Castle of San Martino, which you will reach shortly after.
Km 0.750 – Turn left and enter the castle car park, continuing uphill on the trail that winds its way under the trees. After a few dozen metres, the trail makes a 180° turn and starts heading uphill more steeply, quickly reaching the aqueduct reservoir. Keep going on the main trail, which winds around a few times, until you get to a crossroads.
Km 1.050 – Holding to the right, the route climbs briefly, then descends for a few dozen metres to a bend where it continues on level ground to the left, ignoring a path on the right, it climbs again alongside the barbed wire fence on the right. The trail now offers beautiful views of the centre of Vittorio Veneto and Monte Altare. Descend until you cross the dirt road that descends from the Colle.
Casa Segat (Segat Residence)
Km 1.350 – At the fork, keep right and you will quickly find two further dirt roads. Keep right and continue downhill until you reach the fence of Casa Segat (commonly known as ‘the German’s house’) on your left (on your right is an old trough for cattle to drink from). After a sharp bend, you will reach the end of the slope and begin to climb a small landslide section, then continue along an easy path that is now slightly uphill.
1.650 km – At the fork, keep left and continue uphill until you reach the fence with a gate belonging to Casa Segat.
Km 1.750 – After a few steps, leave the level path and turn right, beginning the uphill climb up the slopes of Monte Altare. After a few dozen metres, you will emerge from the vegetation and see the white cross on the hilltop above. Re-enter the woods and continue climbing until you reach a sharp bend where the slope becomes gentler. At the next bend, ignore the trail that branches off to the left and continue climbing until you reach a small ridge.
Km 2.200 – From the ridge, you can directly go up to the cross, but the route requires a steady footing as there are some rocks to overcome. It is therefore preferable to briefly descend on the other side until you reach a fork in the road.
Cross of Monte Altare
2.300 km – At the fork, proceed straight ahead, first uphill and then downhill, to reach another fork after about fifty metres, where you keep to the left. The path now continues on a slight level stretch.
Km 2.400 – Once you reach another crossroads, near an old abandoned house, keep left and start climbing more steeply (this section can be quite muddy after heavy rainfall).
Km 2.600 – You will reach a hairpin bend. Ignore the trail on the right and continue climbing at a more moderate pace. After two close hairpin bends, you will reach the ridge. A short, highly recommended detour of about fifty metres takes you to the cross. From here, you can enjoy a wide panorama of Vittorio Veneto, Monte Pizzoc, Col Visentin, the surrounding hills and the plain, all the way to the sea. Retrace your steps to find the trail you took earlier.
Ridge of Mount Altare
Km 2.700 – Take the trail that climbs along the ridge. Here, the route becomes more challenging, with rocks, steps and sections of ridge with moderate exposure. The ridge is traversed with various ups and downs, alternating between challenging and easier sections.
Km 3.350 – After a short descent, you reach a staircase made of stone steps leading to the top of Monte Altare. The staircase was unearthed a few years ago and someone called it the “Cleromanti staircase” as it is believed that in pre-Christian times, divination rituals were performed on the top of Monte Altare (also called Colle Maledicto).
Km 3.400 – From the peak, take the path that descends through the trees on the right for about a hundred metres. It is quite steep and slippery when wet. The slope then becomes gentler and, ignoring all the crossroads, continue along the path that makes a wide arc at the top of what was once the “Prà Liss” (now almost completely covered by trees).
Case Foda (Foda Residences)
3.600 km – You will notice a bench and a fork in the road on your right. Continue along the main trail, which initially gently declines and then becomes steeper.
Km 3.900 – Keep right at the crossroads. After a few dozen metres, the trail (which is also quite muddy here after rainfall) widens and you will arrive at a group of houses (Case Foda).
Km 4.200 – Once past the houses, the trail leads downhill on a concrete road until the second hairpin bend.
Km 4.650 – Take the dirt road that leaves off to the left, continuing downhill.
End of route
Km 5.300 – Leave the dirt road and take the path that branches off to the left. About a hundred metres after a bend, you will see the shrine dedicated to Saint Rita.
Km 5.900 – At the crossroads, the road heads sharply down to the right to the concrete road below, where it continues downhill, keeping to the right.
Km 6.200 – At the crossroads, keep left and go up the dirt road which, after the top of the short climb, descends again on a concrete surface.
Km 6.800 – At the junction between Via dei Posoccon, Via San Paolo and Via San Rocco, keep right and go up the dirt road until you reach the small temple dedicated to San Rocco. Proceed downhill until you reach Via San Fris, where you will see a shrine dedicated to San Rocco.
Km 7.100 – Keep left, at first slightly uphill and then downhill, pass the crossroads with Via Correr and continue along Via Rossi, enclosed by the characteristic stone walls of Ceneda just below Villa Papadopoli, until you reach the starting point in Piazza Giovanni Paolo I (km 7.700).
