Trail
Start
Km 0.00 – The route starts from Piazza Giovanni Paolo I (commonly known as Piazza Duomo). Leaving the Cathedral behind, head towards the fountain and turn right onto Via Brevia, which climbs steeply. After about 150 meters, you will reach the intersection with Via San Rocco and Via Cavertino. Continue straight ahead, climbing steadily.
Km 0.450 – Leave the paved road and take the Via Crucis on the left. After walking a few steps, keep to the right and take the small stairway. Proceeding straight ahead, you will quickly reach the ruins of an ancient building known locally as i Palasi or Caregon del Diol (the Devil’s Throne). The main trail continues uphill along the Via Crucis, consisting of a dirt road alternating with steps and marked by the chapels of the various stations. With many turns, it climbs the slopes of Colle di San Paolo, offering beautiful views of both the hamlet of Ceneda and the hills of Carpesica and Formeniga.
Porte di San Zuane (Gate of San Zuane)
Km 0.900 – You will come to a group of abandoned houses. Turn right and then immediately left to take the last steps to the top of the hill. When you reach a stone arch (the ancient Porta di San Zuane – St John’s), without going through it, take the cypress-lined walkway on the right, which leads to the small church of San Paolo al Monte, located at the top of the hill in a secluded and picturesque spot (not open to visitors).
Km 1.100 – After admiring the view, which on clear days stretches from the Pre-Alps to the sea, retrace your steps back to the arch and then descend – without going past it – along a concrete road that curves widely until you reach the abandoned houses you encountered earlier.
End of route
1.200 km – Having avoided the Via Crucis taken earlier, continue along the shaded dirt road that descends to the right and subsequently becomes paved, reaching a crossroads after a few bends.
Km 2.000 – At the junction between Via dei Posoccon and Via San Rocco, continue (following the signs) uphill on the dirt road until you reach the small temple dedicated to San Rocco. Proceed downhill until you reach Via San Fris, where you will see a shrine dedicated to San Rocco.
Km 2.300 – Keep left, at first slightly uphill and then downhill, pass the crossroads with Via Correr and continue along Via Rossi, enclosed by the characteristic stone walls of Ceneda just below Villa Papadopoli, until you reach the starting point in Piazza Giovanni Paolo I (km 2.900).
